Child-Friendly Book Review Websites

Child-Friendly Book Review Websites

Child-Friendly Book Review WebsitesWhere can educators and parents find books that will engage a child’s imagination? From other children, of course.  This post is about three child-friendly book review websites. These are sites where children post book reviews and discuss books with other children. Allowing children to choose which book to read next by reading other children’s reviews may foster a desire to read.  Writing book reviews may lead to improved writing skills. And with these websites, this is accomplished in a safe virtual environment. These sites may also lead to a feeling of inclusion when connecting with other children on social media. I won’t guarantee that children will clamor for books, but anything that might encourage kids to read is worth checking.

There are child-friendly sites which allow only educators and parents to register.  COPPA requirements indicate parents must register children for websites if the children are under 13. Other child safety requirements for websites can be read here.

Following is a list of websites that are safe online environments for children to post book reviews.

The Spaghetti Book Club

spaghetti“The Spaghetti Book Club website is a place for kids who love to read and talk about books! It is the largest site of book reviews written and illustrated by kids for kids.”

Our mission is to instill good reading habits at a young age; to promote reading as a social activity, and to connect kids, parents and teachers to create a virtual ‘reading village.’ We invite you to explore the site. And hope you’ll join us in a great book.”

DOGObooks is where kids discover, review and rate books.  Our goal is to provide a fun, safe and interactive environment for children to share their reactions, thoughts and opinions about books.  All book selections and reviews are moderated prior to being published.”

Child Online Privacy Protection Act

Child Online Privacy Protection Act

If you have been following this blog, you may have read that under the Child Online Privacy Protection Act websites cannot collect information on children under 13 without obtaining parental consent. As I am working with my web developer to create my new website for The Mystic Princesses, I have come up with the following letter that will be incorporated into the site once it goes live. The letter emphasizes that I want the parent to subscribe, rather than the child to avoid the protections required for children. However, it has not been vetted by an attorney, so if you choose to use the letter, it is at your own risk.

Collecting Information from Children Online – the COPPA Rules

The COPPA Rules

Parents, do you know that there is a rule about collecting information from children online? The COPPA Rules prevent websites from  collecting their personal information online without your permission?  And, authors are your blogs and websites collecting information from children under 13? Do you know if your blog or website is in compliance the rule?  I should share that this was written with the laws of the US in mind. If you aren’t in the US, you may want to check your country’s laws.
